The S & S Award - Our Patrons
The S & S Award - New Development
The S&S Award, one of the UK’s most prominent prizes for new musical theatre writing, is expanding. It is going international. Up to now, the Award has only really been geared to UK writers but there has been a concern for some time that this limits the scope of possibilities available to the entrants. Musical theatre is becoming such a global entity – from the US to Europe to South Korea and various points in between – that new writers need to be given opportunities on an international scale to give their work the benefit of maximum exposure.
So, from early 2018, the Award will be open to entrants worldwide and there will be Award presentations at two galas rather than one. As well as the annual London gala, there will be a similar event in New York. On the UK front, we are delighted to announce that the Award will continue its very happy association with Leicester Curve.
As part of the international expansion, Kent Nicholson, director of musical theatre at the prestigious new writing venue Playwrights’ Horizons in New York, and Jimmy Roberts, composer of the legendary I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, have joined Nica Burns of Nimax Theatres and Nikolai Foster of Leicester Curve on the final judging panel.
The S&S judging panel comprises forty-two industry luminaries including director Jeremy Sams, producer Danielle Tarento, musical director Catherine Jayes and artistic director Daniel Buckroyd.
Speaking to The Stage newspaper, Warner Brown and Caroline Underwood, the Award’s founders, said that mentoring of writers would feature largely in the planned changes, with West End musical director Mike Dixon and theatre director Jonathan Butterell as part of the mentoring team.
